Due to the increased use of information systems by organizations, information on the execution of processes are recorded.This enables using process mining as a tool for improving performance. Process mining allows gaining insights regarding actual processes by extracting data from existing systems.
Many projects have been conducted for process discovery, conformance checking, etc. Several algorithms have been implemented into software applications to support them. Despite of the existence of general methods for data analysis, there’s a lack of methods specific to support process mining projects. Thus, completions of such projects are often dependent on expertise of the analysts. This paper presents a method for conducting process mining projects and a tool for supporting its execution and retaining the outcomes of each step. A case is analysed for evaluating them. Organizations seeking improvement can benefit from a method that states how process mining techniques can be used in process mining projects.

Arthur Valle is a Principal Academic Staff Member in the Centre for Information Technology at Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology), where he is the acting Team Manager and also the IT Research Leader.
Arthur has a PhD in Production and System Engineering from Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (PUCPR) in Brazil. As his thesis, he developed a method for applying Process Mining techniques in software process assessments. Arthur has industry and academic background in topics such as Lean Six Sigma; Continuous Improvement; Business Process Management; Software Development; Quality Management; Operations Management; Performance Measurement, Project Management; Service Management and Strategy.
As a former senior IT consultant for the last 20 years, Arthur had been involved in 15+ successful CMMI-based improvement programs in Brazil and abroad.
